In 1951, Ueda Sôkyû created his groundbreaking work 愛 ‘Love’, which was to spark a major controversy among calligraphers. Visually, Ueda’s ‘Love’ bore no resemblance to the character indicated in the title, but instead resembled the character 品 ‘goods’.
